Users Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Injections Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research reveals that individuals who stop using new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals using these drugs should be aware of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to starting mass in about a year and a half.

Weighing Therapies

The research, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

The team note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually see a more gradual creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Quick Rebound

Doctors propose the way of the drugs accounts for the accelerated rebound.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than normal might result in the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Disease?

Health authorities advise the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Experiences

Users who have come off the medication report a powerful return of hunger.

"I experienced a trigger flipping and you become extremely hungry," described an individual.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, experts emphasize that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined behavioural changes.
